Journeys of the Eighth is a structural piece which illustrates the flight paths of those forced to travel from Ireland to the UK to access abortion services. The Eighth amendment is legislation which prevents legal access to abortion in Ireland. This immersive iteration includes audio from the Together for Yes campaign.
The piece was formed over 8 weeks, in conjunction with Andrei Molodkin/Fallout Pattern at Rua Red Dublin and Digital Makers Collective at Tate Exchange, Tate Modern, London.
In this space of time 672 women were forced to travel from Ireland to the UK to access abortion *. There are 672 threads in the structure - one to represent each woman and their journey.
12 make the journey each day*. Click on the individual stories below to hear their experiences, or click process to learn more about the making.
