Journeys of the Eighth began in February 2018 following a brief provided by Andrei Molodokin of A/Political. I was a collaborator in his ‘Fallout Pattern’ exhibition which ran until April 2018. I continued to work on the project after ‘Fallout Pattern’ had finished. It was a shown at the Tate Exchange in London’s Tate Modern, at ‘Data is the New Oil’ in RUA RED and was presented at DIT Media Research Symposium.
The final iteration of the piece was completed on the 26th of May at the opening of the Creative Digital Media Degree Show 2018. This took the form of a performance in which I cut the threads of the structure. See the performance and read more about it on the final performance page. From the inception of the project the piece has been shown in several contexts, however it has always remained very personal to me and my work.

“Throughout the duration of the exhibition students from the Institute of Technology, Tallaght will form part of the instalation, actively investigating and providing a glimpse into the world of data through a series of visualisations projected onto the modular fabricated steel girders in the centre of the gallery.
In placing issues of global concern in Tallaght, Molodkin’s logic is clear: we are all part of a worldwide system, but we also have the power to change it. Being human depends on our commitment to active participation and independence of mind.” – RUARED.ie

I re-imagined how data could be relayed, focusing on making it more accessible to humans. The work was developed through successful collaborations and highly focused group work. The data was illustrated on a large message board. Stories from Irish women who had travelled to access abortion were printed on coloured sheets. The board was dotted with pins, which were connected by thread. The pins correlated with the 87 women who would make the trip over the duration of the show, while the threads represented flight patterns between Ireland and England.

“This year’s show includes an impressive line-up of entertaining, insightful and provocative projects incorporating video, audio production, photography and interactive multimedia. Blending theory and practice, students have generated ideas and written scripts, which they have transformed into a diverse range of innovative media productions.
One of the highlights of this year’s show is work by students who collaborated with renowned Russian artist Andrei Molodkin on themes of hidden information and information flows, in which students endeavored to humanize large sets of data through the use of creative coding, audio, sculpture and documentary filmmaking.” –RUARED.ie
