Each aspect of the design holds significance to the subject matter at hand and the focus on humanising data to increase empathy.
1. The left side of the sculpture represents the departure point of the journeys. 672 women are illustrated on this panel in binary. This is a reference to both loom cards and digital data. Binary code is a numerical system composed of 1s and 0s upon which looms and computers run.
The number 672 is written in binary (0000001010100000) on this side of the loom. Each hole correlates with a 1 and each blank space, a 0.
2. 672 individual threads leave Ireland and land at their destination point on the opposite side of the structure. The pattern of the colours mimic the gradient of a rainbow, this work to emphasise that each woman is different and has their own personal story. This allows for greater empathy.
3. The right hand side of the sculpture represents the arrival point of the journey. It shows 8 bunches of thread, each bunch containing 84 threads - the number of women who travel per week. Surrounding each bunch are 7 pins, on each pin is 12 threads – the number of women who travel per day.
